Commissioner Steps Into The Ring at Wilter’s Boxing Club, Maryport

Cumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Peter McCall will be stepping into the ring at Wilter’s Boxing Club, Maryport on Monday 13 January 6pm to see first-hand how equipment purchased from the Property Fund is being put to good use. The property fund re-invests money seized from criminal activity and distributes it into local projects, aimed at providing activities that help to reduce crime in communities across Cumbria.

Wilter’s boxing club, Maryport open their doors to people of all ages and abilities and have recently been awarded a grant from the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Property Fund to buy more boxing bag mitts, punch bags, mats and head guards.

Cumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Peter McCall comments: “It is important to channel people’s energy into sport in a controlled manner, following set rules and regulations, as this helps them to develop respect, discipline and healthy life choices. 

“A well run club such as this, creates a disciplined environment to develop self-confidence and teamwork.  I am pleased to be able to thank and support the volunteers who run clubs like this, without their enthusiasm and commitment such clubs would not exist.

“By supporting Wilter’s Boxing club in Maryport, the Property Fund has enabled them to purchase a wider array of equipment in order to attract more users. Attending the gym also helps young people to develop key skills transferable to life and appreciate the necessity of following structured and socially acceptable behaviour.

“Being a member of the Boxing Club provides role models, discipline and training opportunities to children who may otherwise be left with nothing to do and at risk of becoming on the fringe of anti-social behaviour.”

Adrian Kirkbride, Councilor for Allerdale and boxing coach at the club comments: “The club gives local people a chance to feel part of something and a sense of belonging.

“The members all comment on how much being part of a club means to them. They appreciate each other and respect is important to club members.

“We encourage all ages, old and young and all abilities, and welcome people to come along and see for themselves on Mondays and Wednesdays 6-8pm what the club is all about.
