Come along and join us at Furness Pride

The Deputy Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner (DPFCC), Mike Johnson will be at Furness Pride this Saturday (13 May) in Barrow-in-Furness town centre, to show support for the LGBTQIA+ community and listen to any concerns residents may have around policing in the area.

DPFCC Mike Johnson, said: “It can often be difficult for people to express who they are, especially in rural areas where we are not as diverse as more urban areas.

“This is why it is so important that we show support for the LGBTQIA+ community across the county.

“We, as a community, need to be allies for each other and celebrate our differences – these differences make our communities stronger.

“That’s why Pride events in Cumbria are so important. They create a welcoming space for anyone who needs advice and support or for those who are simply looking to celebrate who they are.

“Events such as Furness Pride provide people with the opportunity to celebrate who they are in a safe space, without fear of prejudice. They are really positive events and are a lot of fun for the whole family.

“Anyone in the Furness community can come along and have a chat with me about their concerns around Policing. Members from the Office of the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner will also be attending to show our support for the LGBTQIA+ community, provide information on our commissioned victims services and listen to any opinions and concerns the public have around policing, so please come along and speak to the staff.

“These events also give us the opportunity to raise awareness on Hate Crime. Hate crime does take place in Cumbria and I would urge anyone who has experienced intimidation or fear from someone targeting them based on their sexuality, religion, race or gender to report it to the Police on 101 or 999 in an emergency.

“You are not alone – please speak up.

“Together we can make Cumbria an even safer place for all.”

DPFCC Mike Johnson
