Commissioner Continues to Fight Against Cyber Crime

PCC Supports Safer Internet Day

Cumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Peter McCall, is providing an opportunity for people to get some professional cyber-safety advice on Thursday 14 September at the Westmorland Show.

Peter McCall has commissioned the company Get Safe Online to deliver a comprehensive programme of cyber safety and awareness training over the next three years. As part of this, the Get Safe Online team will be at the Westmorland Show on Thursday 14 September. Visitors are invited to come along and receive professional advice on how to stay safe and secure online.

Speaking of the initiative, Peter McCall said: “Cyber-crime is a key threat to individuals, businesses and our communities alike and that is why I have funded Get Safe Online who are specialists in the field of cyber security. They will work with the three Community Safety Partnerships to deliver the programme across the county.

“More and more people live their lives online whether it be through their mobile phone, tablet or computer. This is changing the way that criminals target people. This new, exciting project is about people protecting themselves.”

Tony Neate, CEO of Get Safe Online said: “We’re really excited to join forces with Cumbria Police and support its campaign to keep local businesses and communities safe online. The internet offers so many possibilities for all of us but it’s important that we take simple steps to keep us safe from cyber criminals. Come down and join us at the events to hear our easy-to-follow expert tips and advice to help you stay safe online.”

You can find the teams at Trade Stand Location J350 and J351.

Also on the stand will be Kaspersky’s Ferrari F1 simulator car giving visitors the chance to pit their driving skills against other members of the public.
Detective Chief Inspector Dave Stalker said:

“The online world can be a tremendous force for good but unfortunately, there are people out there who seek to exploit it to the disadvantage of others. In line with the national picture, cyber-crime is therefore an emerging threat to those that live and work in Cumbria.

“This collaboration will help us to protect people in Cumbria from becoming a victim of cyber-crime. The training days that are planned around the county will also provide us and partners with the knowledge to share with our communities. We hope the approach will help individuals across the county in the fight against online criminals.”
