Driving Out Cyber Crime at Penrith’s Winter Droving

Police and Crime Commissioner, Peter McCall invites everyone to take the opportunity and drop into the ‘Get Safe Online’ stand at Penrith’s Winter Droving on Saturday 26th October with their devices, mobile phones and tablets for a free cyber security ‘health check’.

Peter McCall comments: “This is a great opportunity to receive professional easy-to-follow expert tips and advice on how to stay safe and secure online. The internet offers so many possibilities for all of us but it is important that we take simple steps to keep ourselves safe from cyber-criminals.

“The online world can be a tremendous force for good but unfortunately, there are people out there who seek to exploit it to the disadvantage of others.

“Cyber-crime is a key threat to individuals, businesses and our communities alike which is why I funded ‘Get Safe Online’ who are specialists in the field of cyber security, to work alongside our Community Safety Partnership team.

Detective Inspector, Ian Harwood leads Cumbria Constabulary’s cyber and digital crime unit and comments: “In this day and age, cybercrime can affect just about anyone.

“If you shop online, use social media or use email to communicate, you could fall victim to an online criminal if you do not take care.

“We work hard together with our partners to highlight the threat and to prevent people from falling victim.

“We would urge people to be vigilant of all the threats that exist online and to protect themselves as best they can. A great place to start would be an event such as this.”

Maria Booker, Police Programme Director of Get Safe Online said: “We’re pleased to be able to come along to the Winter Droving event to talk to members of the public about online safety and answer any questions they might have about how they can protect themselves and their loved ones when using the internet.

“We firmly believe that small changes can go a long way to keep you safe online so our team of experts will be offering really simple, practical advice that everyone can follow.”
