PCC encourages rural communities to remain vigilant as COVID-19 restrictions ease

Cumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Peter McCall, is urging the public to stay vigilant as the Government eases the COVID-19 restrictions. The county has seen more visitors since travel restrictions were eased as people flock to the Lake District to use popular tourist towns and trails.

Cumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Peter McCall, said: “Cumbria has so many rural communities and normally the consensus is that crime doesn’t happen in these small hamlets, villages, towns etc.

“However; we know that this is not the case and now that the Government’s restrictions around COVID-19 are easing we want to remind anyone that lives or visits these communities that crime is a possibility.

“Now that the public are allowed to travel for exercise we are seeing far more walkers in the hills, on our roads and around farmers’ fields.

“Visitors can absentmindedly commit crimes without realising and this is where the danger lies.

“Our narrow, rural roads can be dangerous for those who do not know them and speeding on these roads can cause accidents, our speeding restrictions are in place for a reason so we would urge drivers to stick to the speed limit or, if hesitant, to take bends and corners slowly.

“Cumbria is a great place to let dogs stretch their legs but we do have many farms with livestock in the county.

“Allowing your dog off their leash puts both the livestock and your dog at risk of stress, injury and in worst case scenarios fatalities for all animals involved so please keep your dog on a leash whenever you are in a rural setting.

“Lastly I would urge any visitors to remember to tidy up after themselves.

“Littering may seem like a victimless act but not only do you ruin the idyllic walks and scenery for other visitors, our incredible wildlife can be affected by it too.

“My message to the public is very simple: please follow the rules when visiting Cumbria and be courteous to others on the road and in our communities.”

If you would like to report a crime or any suspicious behaviour please call the Police on 101 or 999 in an emergency. Anyone who would like to report a crime anonymously can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
