PCC Funds Hate Crime Production

Cumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner Peter McCall attended a powerful theatre production aimed at raising awareness of hate crime.

The play, ‘Feel the Hate’, was performed yesterday (2nd October) at the Furness Academy and produced by the Alter Ego Theatre Group. The play has been touring secondary schools across the county raising awareness to years 8 to 11 since it was rolled out last year.

The company was commissioned by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner to develop and produce a play to help raise awareness to years 8 to 11 about what a hate crime is, what they should do if they experience or witness a hate crime and about the impact and seriousness of such crime.

Peter McCall said: “I am pleased to support this production as I am committed to encouraging people to come forward and report hate crime, although I know in some circumstances how difficult this can be. By spreading the message to our younger citizens, I am hopeful that awareness will be raised and I encourage all victims to have the confidence to come forward so that we can help.

“I found the performance immensely powerful and hard hitting. Judging by the reactions of the young people watching, I am confident that the messages hit home. I would like to thank the Alter Ego Theatre Group for their excellent production.”

Mr McCall will also be attending performances at Appleby Grammar School, Friday 13 October at 2pm, and Solway Community College on Monday 30 October, 09:30am.
