Peter McCall launches his fifth Annual Report

Cumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Peter McCall, launches his fifth Annual Report today, one of his statutory responsibilities under the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act, as part of the public holding-to-account role.

Peter McCall said: “I am delighted to launch this, my fifth Annual Report. It covers the period from 1st April 2020 to 31st Match 2021 and sets out how I have carried out the statutory functions of my role, such as setting the budget, developing a Police and Crime Plan and holding the Chief Constable to account.

“Due to restrictions around the pandemic, the Government took the decision to postpone Police and Crime Commissioner elections until May 2021, which enabled me to work with the Constabulary and continue to focus on the needs of Cumbria residents during what has been, for so many, a very challenging time.

“I would like to thank all our frontline police officers, PCSOs, staff and volunteers for their work over the last eighteen months. It has not been easy for either the public or the police who have had to be on the frontline facing the pandemic throughout.

“I am very pleased that earlier in the year, as a result of money raised through the council tax and the Government’s national officer uplift programme, the recruitment drive for 2020/2021, the Constabulary exceeded their targets. Police officer numbers currently stand at 1216 and Cumbria is well placed for any future challenges.

“Public engagement is an important part of my role and during the year I have continued to run online surgeries, attended community meetings and hosted numerous focus groups and Facebook Live events. This has enabled me to hear first-hand the views of local people about policing priorities in the areas where they live. I have been able to share these concerns with the Chief Constable and work together to further improve our policing service in Cumbria.

“I believe that this report reflects just how much work we do in collaboration with the broader public, third sector, local councils, business, volunteers and many others. By working together, with the vision ‘we, not they’, we can ensure that our communities thrive, and Cumbria remains one of the safest places to live in the country.”
