Property Fund making a difference in Ulverston
Cumbria’s Deputy Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner (DPFCC), Mike Johnson joined the Ulverston’s Rockets girls cricket team from Ulverston Cricket Club (UCC) at the launch of their new outdoor cricket nets, to see first-hand how the equipment purchased from the Property Fund is being put to good use.
The Property Fund re-invests money seized from criminal activity and distributes it into local projects, aimed at providing activities that aim to reduce anti-social behaviour and crime in communities across Cumbria.
Ulverston Cricket Club hosts teams of all ages and abilities and were awarded a £2,500 grant from the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner’s Property Fund. Along with contributions from English Cricket Board, club fund-raising initiatives and sponsorship from local businesses, the club has built a state-of-the-art cricket net facility.
DPFCC Mike Johnson comments: “I am pleased that we’ve been able to provide funding through the Property Fund, which re-invests money seized from criminals. It’s great to be able to channel some of this cash back into the community, to help provide opportunities and support local activities, charities and voluntary groups.
“It is important to encourage young people into sports such as cricket, as following set rules and regulations, helps them to develop respect, discipline and make healthy life choices.
“A well-run organisation, such as Ulverston Cricket Club creates a safe environment that helps their 100 plus young players to develop self-confidence and teamwork. I am pleased to be able to thank and support all the volunteers, who without their enthusiasm and commitment, such clubs would not exist.
“It was clear from my visit, that Ulverston Cricket Club gives local people a chance to feel part of something and a real sense of belonging. Clubs such as this, help to develop supportive communities, where people work together.”
Head coach at UCC, Owain Oxenham, who was awarded English Cricket Board’s ‘Coach of the Year’ in 2021 comments: “The Property Fund has helped transform our practice facilities and will enable high quality training throughout the year.
“This new facility has already attracted new male and female players, adult and junior, to our growing cricketing community.

Detective Sergeant, John Dilks from Barrow NPT, who supported the application comments: “I have been involved with Ulverston Cricket Club for almost 20 years and I am aware the Club members and committee have been crying out for new training facilities for a very long time. Being able to expand the facilities locally and build a brand-new training area is pivotal in attracting young players to the club.
“Ulverston Cricket Club is a real focus for the local community and to see so many of the local youths, from Ulverston and surrounding areas, is fantastic and with these new nets they now have a real sense of purpose to practice their cricket.
“We hope this facility will continue to attract youngsters down to the club and they can enjoy a sport in a safe and friendly environment.”
